Anime 101: Dr. Stone

Dr. Stone is an adventure anime that first aired in 2019. The story is based on the manga which has sold over ten million copies worldwide. This anime is jam-packed with action and comedy, but the best part is how it encourages young viewers to engage with science.

Synopsis

In the anime, Dr. Stone, all of humanity mysteriously becomes petrified stone statues. However, after 3700 years, a high schooler named Senku Ishigami finally breaks free from his stone shell. Senku’s one passion in life is science and when he finds he’s the only person who isn’t made of rock, he sets out on a grand task to rescue the other humans. What was so special about him and why was he was able to break free?

Using the scientific method, as well as lots of trial and error, Senku manages to revive one of his friends, Taiju, who has a pure heart and a strong will. Senku only revives two more people before running into trouble.

The second person revived by Senku was a famous wrestler thousands of years ago. His name is Tsukasa and he dreams of a world where the strong prevail untainted by technology. Tsukasa denounces science and says it can only lead to power imbalances and corruption. This belief drives a wedge between he and Senku and forces them to go separate ways.

While on his own, Senku meets many interesting characters. He then begins his scientific journey to rebuild society from the ground up with his newfound allies. Although hesitant at first, they eventually learn that true power is the knowledge gained through science.

Dr. Stone has a mysterious plot and plenty of astounding science experiments. The fun character designs and comedy make this an easy watch for both young viewers and old. Additionally, cliffhangers keep the audience constantly guessing which direction this story will take. The series will welcome a brand new third season in 2023.

Where To Watch

Dr. Stone is available for streaming on Funimation and Crunchyroll.
