Overlord is a dark fantasy anime that first aired in 2015. The story is based on the light novel which has 15 volumes. This anime is a classic isekai, an anime where the main character is pulled into another world, and in this case, our main character finds himself trapped in an open-world virtual reality video game where users possess magical abilities and equipment in order to fight monsters.
Synopsis
In the anime, Overlord, a Full-Dive Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game was released in 2026. It allows players an incredibly lifelike gameplay experience in an online fantasy world. The game sees 12 years of success before it is inevitably shut down. Within the video game, there is a guild with immense strength, called Ainz Ooal Gown. It once consisted of 41 players, but prior to the shut down, the remaining members total only four. One of those members, is Momonga.
Momonga is deeply saddened to see his favorite game coming to a close, so he chooses to stay logged in until the very end. This, however, could spell trouble for him when, to his surprise, he isn’t forcibly booted from the game. Instead, his consciousness persists. He gains senses in the game he never had before, such as smell and taste, and all of the NPCs have procured wills of their own.
Momonga, now unable to log out or communicate with other players, sets out on a journey to discover if there is anyone else like him remaining in the game. He takes on the name “Ainz Ooal Gown,” hoping that someone out there will recognize the guild’s name from its previous glory.
Overlord centers around a character that is incredibly strategic and overpowered. The show isn’t about whether or not Ainz Ooal Gown will succeed, but how many unexpected events will occur along the way and will he ever be able to find a purpose in this game turned reality. It’s the perfect show for action fans who love fight scenes. The series welcomed a brand new fourth season on July 5th, 2022.
Where To Watch
Overlord is available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
