Anime 101: Re:Zero

Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World, is a dark fantasy, psychological thriller that began airing in 2016. The story is based on a light novel first published in 2012. This multi-award-winning anime is a perfect example of an ‘isekai,’ or anime in which one finds themself in another world. Re:Zero is a captivating tale of time travel, magic, and self-growth.

Synopsis

In the anime, Re:Zero, Natsuki Subaru suddenly finds himself on the streets of a fantasy world. He has no idea how he got to this magical realm or why he was summoned. However, back in Japan, Subaru was an avid gamer who was bored with life. So, rather than trying to get back home, he’s excited for the opportunity to live out his dreams and win this new game.

Unfortunately, this new world isn’t as bright and fun as he initially thought it’d be. Subaru is quickly cornered in an alley by muggers. That’s when he meets a mysterious half-elf girl. She saves him out of the kindness of her heart, despite her pressing quest. A thief has stolen something precious to the girl and to show his gratitude, Subaru agrees to help her retrieve it.

After locating the thief’s hideout, Subaru ventures in to take back what was stolen. There, he sees blood on the floor. A dead body lies in front of him. There’s no time for him to escape before being brutally murdered by the assassin waiting inside. The anime doesn’t end there, though. The brightly lit streets of the fantasy world greet him once again when he regains consciousness.

How did he get back to town? Why is it daytime again? The people Subaru spoke to earlier don’t recognize him. Events are repeating themselves. He realizes he’s been given the power to go back in time, but only when he dies. For the low-price of experiencing death over and over again, he is able to re-write his past.

Re:Zero follows the story of a man who hates death more than anything, but is forced to surround himself with it in order to save the ones he loves. This anime is gory and suspenseful, while simultaneously tackling difficult topics such as dark pasts, complex morality, and self-worth. The world-building is extraordinary and the characters are charming. This is a must-see anime if you’re a fantasy fan.

Re:Zero is available for streaming on HBO Max, Amazon Prime, Netflix, VRV, Funimation, and Crunchyroll.
